Fight For Palestine

Facebook has recently agreed to change their position and take a position on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. They agreed to the request of a group of Israeli right-wingers to be able to select Israel as an option for those who live in the West Bank Jewish Colonies. Haaretz daily newspaper quoted Brandee Barker, Facebook's director of communications, saying, ''Facebook users in the Israeli West Bank settlements of Maale Adumim, Beitar Illit, and Ariel can now choose between Israel and Palestine,' Barker said last week in an email to Reuters. We also offer Hebron in both Israel and Palestine,' Barker said, referring to the major West Bank city which is home to about 150,000 Palestinians and some 400 Israelis."

Israel Occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip on June 4, 1967 in what became know later as the Six Day War. The occupation was considered illegal and Israel was asked to withdraw from the territories it occupied as a result of the war. The International community represented by the Security Council of the United Nations and the UN General Assembly, was clear with Israel in the 242 resolution, which asked Israel to withdrew and considered Israel as an occupation force.

Nowadays, there are political negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and the State of Israel to resolve the issue of the occupied territories. This land has never been part of Israel, nor recognized by the international community, including the US--Israel''s biggest alley-- as part of Israel.

In the midst of the negotiation process, Facebook decided to lean towards right wing Jewish settlers who took advantage of the occupation laws to live in an occupied land. This petition is not asking Facebook to sympathize with the Palestinians, but instead it is asking Facebook not to change history by accepting illegal facts made on the ground by force.

We believe that Facebook as a social network, must stay neutral, or at least take the US. Government position from this issue, not a few right-wingers. Facebook's move is not going to contribute to justice or stability in the region, but it will make many of us unhappy and rethink of our relation with the network.

Finally, this petition asks Facebook to step back from their recent move, and leave the issues of the disputed land to the parties in charge to resolve them. Especially, it is not in Facebook''s favor to take positions when it comes to this issue.

We the undersigned ask Facebook to not allow users of Facebook who live in Jewish settlements in the West Bank to choose their country of residency so that it appears that they are from the State of Israel. Their resident status should be listed as what it is internationally recognized as: The Occupied Palestinian Territories.
